ASE certification is the clearest way in this trade to prove what you know and get paid for it. It is also more confusing than it needs to be: eight separate tests, four registration windows a year, fees that stack, and a clock that starts the day you pass. Here is what it actually costs and how to get registered.
Do you qualify to test?
You need hands-on experience, not just a passing score. ASE requires one of:
- Two years of relevant hands-on work experience, or
- One year of experience plus a qualifying training program
A community college or trade school program can substitute for one year, but you still need at least one year of real shop time. There is no school-only path.
The experience has to match the test. Lube rack time does not qualify you for the transmission test.
One thing most people miss: you can take and pass the test before you have the experience. ASE holds the result and issues the certification once you document the time. If you just finished school, test while the coursework is still fresh.
The eight tests
- A1 Engine repair
- A2 Automatic transmission and transaxle
- A3 Manual drivetrain and axles
- A4 Suspension and steering
- A5 Brakes
- A6 Electrical and electronic systems
- A7 Heating and air conditioning
- A8 Engine performance
What it costs in 2026
- $34 registration fee per order
- $62 per general certification test (A1 through A8)
- $124 per Advanced Level test (L1 through L4)
- $62 per general recertification test
- $52 per year for the ASE Renewal App
One test runs $96 all in. All eight in a single order is $530.
The biggest money saver: that $34 registration fee is charged per order, not per test. Four tests in one order costs $34 in registration. Four tests booked separately costs $136. Group them.
Recertification is capped at $186 in test fees per order, so renewing everything tops out around $220 including registration.
When you can register in 2026
- Winter January 10 to March 31
- Spring April 10 to June 30
- Summer July 10 to September 30
- Fall October 10 to December 31
Register inside a window, then schedule your seat at a Prometric test center. Do not wait until the last week. Seats around Detroit fill up, especially evenings and Saturdays.
Master Technician status
Pass all eight A-series tests and keep all eight current at the same time and you are an ASE Master Automobile Technician. Let one lapse and you lose the master designation until you recertify it.
How long it lasts
Five years. Recertification is a shorter test, and the ASE Renewal App lets you keep credentials current with ongoing questions instead of sitting a full exam.
If a certification lapses, you lose the credential and any Master status that depended on it, but you do not lose access to the shorter recertification test. Once you have been certified in a test area, ASE lets you come back with the recert exam rather than the full-length original. Still, a lapse means the credential is off your name until you sit for it again, so put your expiration date in your phone with a six month warning.
